A side hustle is something that nearly everyone thinks of doing at one point or another. Whether the motivation is just for fun, such as in a hobby or a deep-seated desire to make money and completely quit your full-paid job.
Starting a side hustle can provide you with some quick money, but can take a big chunk of your time if you want to turn it into a full-time job.
One of the reasons why people choose a side hustle is the ability to be able to work from home. With children or other family commitments, it offers flexibility that full-time work does not provide. If you decide you don’t want to leave your full-time job, then the option exists to do it outside your normal work hours.
You need to check what your employer thinks about it, and be careful about talking about your activities at work. Many workplaces may not be very supportive of such side projects, so tread carefully.
If you plan to make some money on the side then here are some suggestions which could turn out to be quite successful businesses on their own. The easiest option is to pick an area in which you have experience, and that you are very passionate about. Keep reading to find out more.
1. Selling items online on auction sites.
There are several people I know that make a reasonable living sourcing and selling used goods on such sites. For example, old antique dolls are not for everyone, but it is a good niche and some people make a good living catering for this area. Other things you could sell include used furniture, used computers, hi-fi goods. Basically anything that interests you and has demand.
2. Taxi Driver or Uber driver
This is something that has potential if you have time on weekends or evenings. You won’t become rich, and you won’t be able to grow this business, but it is an option to make some money on the side.
3. Offer accommodation
Websites like Airbnb offer great potential for people that have some spare rooms, or part of your home. Many people make money by leasing a house and then rent out spare rooms to others, and in some cases the additional rental income essentially allows them to offset their rent expense and live ‘rent-free’.
4. Personal Coach or Tutoring online (using Skype, Zoom, etc.)
If you are good at English or Maths or anything else you can consider offering lessons online. Many people are trying to learn English for instance, and if you are willing to learn the basics of teaching you could slowly develop a regular income stream. The world will be your oyster and if you can market and get a good reputation there is a big potential market from all around the globe.
5. Become a Blogger
This is a long-term project, and initially, you will not be making any money at all. However, if you can market your blog, deliver great content then you can make money in the long term. However, it needs to be your passion, since you probably won’t see much return for a long time. It also involves spending quite a considerable amount of time writing articles.
6. Become a Youtuber
YouTube is something that you can consider. You could provide free advice initially, or just talk about what you enjoy. Once you get a following of viewers you could start to run paid courses. The sky is the limit on this one. We have all heard the stories of people making a lot of money unboxing toys, reviewing anything from cameras to plushie toys.
7. Write a book.
With the emergence of eBooks, some people make a reasonable living writing and selling eBooks. There is a range of websites that you can post your eBook.
8. Babysit or become a nanny.
This is quite self-explanatory, you could use one of the many websites to post your profile, or just use word of mouth to find business. People want good reliable help, and if you are conscientious and reliable you will have no shortage of work.
9. Cleaning Services
This area has a lot of potential, and I’m aware of one person at least who is making a lot of money on what started just cleaning houses. It was not long before they hired a second person to help them, then a third, fourth and then a fifth. Now they have a large business which has contracts for many office buildings.
10. Become a freelance writer
There are many newspapers and magazines that are in search of quality writers, once you develop a reputation you can make a reasonable income. You can even become a ghost-writer for well-known authors.
11. Personal Trainer
Personal fitness is a growth industry, as is the desire to offer one on one guidance in the fitness field. If you have a passion for fitness you can consider your options in this field.
12. Music Lessons
Do you play the piano or other instrument? If you are good at it and can do some additional training to meet the required level you could offer a tutoring service. There are quite a few websites that allow you to post your profile and people can reach out to you.
13. Write job applications
Many people are terrible at writing resumes or don’t have the time. If you have a flair for writing applications, then this could have some potential. Some jobs have special requirements, for example, government, federal jobs. If you specialize in a particular area you could develop a good niche to earn some good side money. However, jobs have deadlines, so you may be required to work under pressure to complete your assignments.
14. Start a GoFundMe Page.
People from all walks of life and for reasons ranging from noble to the bizarre start such pages. Not sure how much money you will make but it is an option if you have some creative ideas that people are prepared to fund.
